Startup #62 – One Billion Voices

June 18, 2007 · 3 Comments

bill-gates.jpgMy boss gave a ridiculously inspiring speech for the Harvard Commencement this past weekend.  Go read this: http://viralvoice.net/2007/06/11/bill-gates-harvard-commencement-speech/

OK, for those of you who didn’t read it, here’s a quick excerpt:

Imagine, just for the sake of discussion, that you had a few hours a week and a few dollars a month to donate to a cause – and you wanted to spend that time and money where it would have the greatest impact in saving and improving lives. Where would you spend it?”

The basic premise behind Bill’s speech is that many of the world’s big problems are unresolved not because of a lack of caring, but because of a lack of awareness.  My idea is a response to that – a site where users are matched with specific, actionable issues that need more attention and given incentives to become a champion for their cause

It’s a little complex to explain in just a few paragraphs, but here goes.  First, a new user would come to the site and would be assigned to a very specific cause with a set deadline.  For example, the issue wouldn’t be “disease prevention in Africa”, it would be “help 5 infants receive a polio vaccination in a village in Tanzania by August 30th”.

Instead of just asking for donations to solve the problems, the goal for the end user would be to generate awareness for their issue.  Each activity would have a target number of points, and users would recieve points for performing various awareness tasks.  For example, the issue I mentioned above may have a goal of 250 points by August 30th.  A user might earn 20 points for posting about the issue on their Facebook profile, and 1 point for each friend who clicks on the Facebook add-in as a sign of support.  Of course, the Facebook add-in (or any awareness campaign activity) would also have a link to donate actual money towards the cause.  Also, each point would go towards the ultimate goal of the site: generate a total of one billion awareness points (aka voices) to motivate all users towards achieving a common goal.

Once a user achieves the target number of points, they would receive a “badge of honor” and the site would make a donation to fulfill the initial task.  Users would then be assigned a new task at the next challenge level, which would have more points and/or a shorter timeline.  Over time, users could build up their level and work towards acheiving bigger and better badges.

I’ll end with another quote from the speech:

“Yes, inequity has been with us forever, but the new tools we have to cut through complexity have not been with us forever. They are new – they can help us make the most of our caring – and that’s why the future can be different from the past.”

Beta Invites to a Couple Hot New Startups

June 17, 2007 · 9 Comments

I’ve got three beta invites to a couple of the hottest new startups in town: Spock and I’m In Like With You.  If you want one, just post in the comments below – first come first serve!

Spock is a new people search engine that has been getting a ton of buzz lately.  It’s still pretty sparsely populated, but I can see where it could be useful as more people get onboard.  Lots of good thinking going on with that team.

I’m In Like With You absolutely rocks.  I’m about as far off the market as one can get right now, but if I were single this would be my new favorite site.  The theoretical idea is that users create little “games” that other users need to pay to play.  What’s really going on is that members have a fixed amount of currency that they can use to get the attention of other members.

For example, you start with 500 points.  If you find someone you are really into, you can spend all 500 points to ”play their game”, which is basically a flattering way of saying “I like your profile so much that I’m willing to spend all my points just for the chance to talk to you”.  I know it sounds odd, but trust me on this one - it’s genius.  Here’s your chance to jump on now before this thing goes public and blows up.

Sorry for the Tease…

June 17, 2007 · 1 Comment

but I just can’t bring myself to post about the idea I had last Friday.  I’m going to spend a little more time thinking about it, and if I can convince myself not to pursue it, I’ll post here shortly.  But for the time being I just can’t risk giving it away quite yet.  Sorry!

Good idea coming soon…stay tuned!

June 15, 2007 · 3 Comments

I got hit by an idea today that I just fell in love with!  I can’t wait to post it but I don’t have time right now (got a hot date!).  I’ll try to post later tonight.

Definitely look out for this post - it’s one of those “I-wish-I-was-unemployed-so-I-could-start-working-on-it” ideas.  :)

Yet Another Contest!

June 14, 2007 · 3 Comments

You’d think that I would have learned my lesson after the less than enthusiastic response for my last contest…but what the heck!  The rules for this one are very simple.  I’ve got basic outline of an idea, but I need your help to flesh out the implementation details.  Our esteemed panel of judges will put the entries to a vote, and the best one wins.

Here’s the pitch:  Teenagers love social networking sites but parents are flipping out about the dangers of allowing their kids to talk to strangers.  How would you implement a Facebook-like safe social networking site for middle school/high school students?

Send your ideas to kleneway _AT_ hotmail.com.  Ideas should be in a similar format to the ideas I present on this blog (1-2 paragraphs) and winners will be chosen based on creativity, humor, and feasibility of the proposed idea.  Deadline for entries is midnight PST on Thursday, June 21.

Remember…no one, and I mean NO ONE actually reads this blog, so if you even have an inkling of an idea, send it to me!  Trust me, the odds of winning this thing are ridiculously in your favor.  :)   Good luck!

Celebrity Guest Post!

June 12, 2007 · 1 Comment

seth.jpgI have my first celebrity guest post!  It’s from my good buddy Mr. Seth Varty.  He’s actually the one who introduced me to blogs a few years back, so if it weren’t for him, I’d probably not be getting into trouble from my girlfriend for spending so much time on the Internet.  Thanks, Seth.  Anyway, check out his idea – it’s a good one!

So someone sent me an email asking for ideas on what their sister and husband could do for a night out in Seattle and it got me thinking.  There should be a collection of websites that have date ideas for various cities. Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, etc.   They’d be pretty straightforward sites, where you could browse suggestions by category.  So fun/humor (dinner + comedy club) or music (concerts etc) or romantic (fancy restaurants and walks on the beach) or aniversary or even first date, things like that.

You could also provide a platform for users to submit their own date ideas, so you aren’t always having to think things up.  A simple rating system and you could easily provide a way for people to search out the best dates for Friday night when you’re feeling like a light humored fun night out in Houston or maybe it is a first date and so forth and so forth.

The key would be that it would be a network of sites for a bunch of different cities.  You do a little bit of research on various cities, get your base dates into the site and then rely on the users to build out the content for the site.  There is also a benefit to a network when it comes to advertising, more sites obviously mean more users, but a larger geographic footprint means more slicing and dicing of user demographics to increase CPMs.

What do you guys think?  I love it – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to scramble around at the last minute trying to think of a good date idea.  The key is the part towards the end about initially seeding the site before opening it up to user-generate content.

Do you have a great idea?  Send it to me and you could be the next celebrity guest poster.  Woot!

Startup #61 – Screen Save The Planet

June 12, 2007 · 5 Comments

black.jpgHere are a bunch of made-up stats to scare you into joining the fight against global warming:

  • - Computer screens account for over 100 trillion megajoule-hours each year
  • - It takes 16 times as much energy to power an all-white screen vs an all-black screen
  • - 13 million barrels of oil a DAY would be saved if Google were to change their background to solid black instead of white.  That’s equivalent to 1 million trees, 200 thousand kilotons of coal, or 8,366,001 spotted owls.

Scared yet?  You better be.  But don’t despair, hope is on the way!  My idea is a series of environmentally friendly screen savers and desktop backgrounds.  How can a screen saver save the planet?  Well, a computer screen is made up of millions of pixels that are comprised of three lights.  When all three lights are on, you see white.  And when they are all off, you see black.  By having a screen saver that is mostly black, you end up saving more energy than if the screen saver were white or a combination of other colors.  (see, I’m not totally making this up!)

The screen saver or background doesn’t have to be solid black.  It could be a pattern or picture comprised of low-energy colors that would raise awareness around the energy saving power of the “Screen Save The Planet” campaign.

What do you guys think?  Come on, Screen Save the Planet – that’s catchy!

Startup #60 – Ad Tip Jar

June 11, 2007 · 8 Comments

<insert semi-witty story here>

Today’s idea is a browser plug-in that can be used to tip an interesting site using their existing advertisting.  Here’s how it would work.  The plug-in would be a single “Leave A Tip” button that lights up when it detects AdSense ads on a page.  If you enjoy the site’s content, you can click the button and it would psuedo-click the ads, opening them discreetly as new tabs.  The great thing about this (besides being ridiculously easy to implement) is that you’d be able to reward sites that provide good content without implementing some sort of complex micro-payment system.

Sorry for phoning this one in, it’s been a long day!  Too bad, ’cause I actually kinda like this idea.  :)

Brainstorm – Illegal Ideas

June 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Let’s not kid ourselves.  Coming up with a new startup idea every single freakin’ day is hard.  To keep the ideas flowing, I’ve got a variety of brainstorming techniques I like to use.  One fun excercise I’m trying out today is thinking up ideas that would be awesome…except for one tiny little detail – they’re against the law.  One caveat to that: although the idea might be against the law, I want to keep it within some ethical bounds.  No ninja-for-hire or MyNeighborIsOutOfTown.com sites here.

First idea is an easy one.  It would be a Napster-like site where you could download any song, movie, or TV show ever made.  Forget torrents – the content would be hosted on a *fast* centralized server for downloading content, which would also be available online for instant streaming.  This would be hands-down one of the most popular sites on the Internet.

The closest I’ve seen to this idea is the new lala.com.  These guys have gusto – they’re basically paying the up-front costs to allow users to play on-demand streaming music in hopes that enough people buy the album from their site.  It’s a race to see if their user base can swell big enough for them to get bought out before they run out of funding.  Check it out while it lasts!

OK, next idea.  Disclaimer on this one: I don’t use or advocate the use of any non-legal substances.  With that out of the way – a site where you could purchase a small amount of a special type of herb that would be delivered fresh to your door within 48 hours.  Maybe just enough to fill your perscription or weave a small hemp potholder or something.  :)

Here’s one’s that a little less obviously illegal – a social networking site that pays you for each new member you recruit.  Here’s how this could work.  You pay $5 to join.  For every friend that you recruit to join the site, you’d earn an additional $2.50.  For each of their friends that they recruit, you earn another $1.  And for the friends of friends of friends, another $.50.  In other words, a classic pyramid scheme.

OK, now let’s do the math.  Let’s say you pay your $5, you convince 5 friends to join, they have 5 of their friends, and those users recruit 5 of their friends.  The total you’d earn would be 5 * $2.50 + 25 * $1 + 125 * $.50 = $100 (thanks, Instacalc!).  As site owner, you’d earn a minimum of $1 per new user and have a built-in recruitment engine that would grow your earnings exponentially.

Now it’s your turn – forget about those pesky laws, let’s hear some of your illegal ideas in the comments below.

Startup #59 – LOLCAT BUILDR FOR UZ!!

June 8, 2007 · 3 Comments

If you’re confused right now, go here.  That’s OK, I’ll wait.  Back?  Good.  On to the idea.

Forget Web 2.0 logo generators and l33t translators - today’s idea is an lolcat builder.  The concept is pretty straightforward.  You upload a picture (or choose one from the gallery) of your cat, dog, baby, etc..  You enter a caption (or choose one from the gallery) to be tranzlatd into ur vry own lolcatz capshun.  And presto – within nanoseconds you’d have your very own lolcat image available to set as your desktop wallpaper or share with your friends.  Or, better yet, why not purchase a personalized t-shirt or mousepad featuring your creation?

OK, you caught me.  I’m a sucker for lolcats and I’ll come up with any excuse to post an lolcat pic.  Speaking of $100, one of my ideas is currently in 4th place over on the IdeaWarz contest with only 4 days, 14 hours left to vote.  Support me and my incredibly noble quest to win a hundred bucks - vote today!
